Watercolors, gouache, and poster colorshave a lot of similarities, but they're not exactly the same.
In this video we'll show you what the difference is between these water-soluble paints.
All of these paints are made with pigments, binders, and additives.
The differences between them come down to variations in their formulas.
Pigments are tiny pieces of stone and other raw materials that give paint its color.
These stay as physical particles and do not dissolve in water like dye.
Binders are what hold the paint together.
Many water-soluble panes use gum arabic.
Additives vary between manufacturers.
Some additives are necessary, but artists' quality paints usually have more pigment relative to additives than student paints.
Watercolors can come in dry pans or moist tubes.
They are made with very small pigment particles.
More of the paper shows between each particle, which makes watercolor paints look transparent.
Watercolor paints work best on sturdypaper designed to stand up to lots of water.
It's best to start with light colors and add dark colors later.
Techniques like lifting and scraping canbe used to lighten areas that are too dark, but they're not as effectivebecause the small pigments get stuck between the paper fibers.
Artists often use many layers of thin watercolor paints, known as washes and glazes, to achieve shadows and give paintings depth.
Gansai are Japanese watercolors and come in dry pans.
They have slightly bigger pigments than Western watercolors which makes them a little more opaque and easier to lift.
Gansai paints can be used similarly to western watercolors but they are designed to be applied as a single layer on absorbent Japanese washi paper rather than in multiple layers.
They tend to be more intensely pigmented than western watercolors, which makes them more vibrant.
Gansai can also have a glossy finish.
This is because they are made with different binders than gum arabic, like beeswax, syrup, or the traditional binder of animal glue.
Gouache is considered opaque watercolor, but some colors can be semi-transparent depending on how they are made.
Gouache is made with intense concentrations of large pigment particles.
Many gouaches use additives to make them more opaque, but the M.
Graham Gouache we are using does not.
It's best to use gouache with sturdy paper, and you can use it on colored paper as well.
Gouache produces a flat finish that is difficult to achieve with watercolor paint.
Its opacity gives you the flexibility to addlighter colors on top of dark paints, instead of only working light to dark.
Gouache can easily be used with watercolors or on its own.
It acts similarly to watercolors when diluted with water, and you can even mix white gouache with watercolor paint to make the watercolor more opaque and vibrant.
Poster color is a general term for water-soluble opaque paints that are meant to be scanned for reproduction rather than displayed.
They are usually less expensive and not very lightfast.
Poster colors' opacity comes from large, coarsely ground pigments and additives.
Unlike many other poster colors, theNicker Poster Colors we are using do list their lightfastness ratings.
Poster colors can be used a lot like gouache, both on white and toned paper.
As they are very opaque, it is easy to add highlights on top of dark colors.
Because some colors use multiple pigments, the paints can make muddy or desaturating colors when mixed.
They are very vibrant when used straight from the tube.
It's best to start with large blocks of colors, then add small details on top.
Poster colors lift easily, so new layers can mix with dry colors underneath.
Use thicker paint over previous layers to avoid this.

- I feel like Bob Ross right now.
You know, I'm just gonna.
(playful whistling music) (fast rock music) Hey guys it's Kayla!- And Mom! - From We Are The Davises.
- And today we're gonna be doing a three color challenge on a giant poster.
- So we have three colors.
- We have blue.
- [Both] Red.
- And yellow.
- So what are these? - These are the primarycolors so we can mix them.
- How many colors do you think we can make with three colors? - I don't know, you can't make like pink, because you need white for pink.
Well you can make a lot ofcolors, like most of the rainbow.
- I also gave us these muffin pans.
- Life hack, if youdon't wanna make a mess just stick the paint in here.
And it works well.
- We're gonna try it.
So maybe we can make abunch of individual colors and give it a more rainbowy look.
- Yes! - Let's start mixing these and see what kinda colors we come up with and then Kayla's gonna paintthat side of the poster and then I'm gonna try andpaint this side of the poster and then somewhere in themiddle we're gonna meet and we'll just see how it turns out.
Hopefully it'll be cute.
(lighthearted ukulele music) - My hands are covered in paint already.
Washable paint this time.
- Washable paint so thisshould not hurt our clothes.
- Ooh, you have like a teal color.
That's kinda fun.
- I kept mixing andthen it started changing and I think still got roomto make another color.
- Wow! We got red, orange, yellow, green, light green.
- Light green and dark green.
And then a dark blue, and then purple.
- I think I gotta makea couple more colors.
(laughing)I want light green, so that's mostly yellowwith a little bit of blue.
- Okay let's get started.
I'm doing the dolphins.
(soft music) When you first like globit on it's kinda dark, so we're just gonna make it nice and thin.
I feel like Bob Ross right now.
- So I've got some coconuts up here, maybe I'll start with that and then go to the palmleaves on the palm tree.
- Yeah, your side is more jungley, my side's more beach like.
'Cause I got my like, beachumbrella, we got palm tree, we got seashells, we gotsand, we got the ocean.
- [Mom] You got all kinds of stuff.
Now let's do the ocean, I'm not gonna color the whole ocean 'cause that would take forever.
- We're tryin' to make some brown, so that's gonna be my attemptfor brown, right there.
- I'm very proud of myself, I made dark blue with no black.
- [Mom] No black? - Yeah, I just mixeda little bit of red in and it made it darker.
Okay I know that the wavesaren't the neatest thing.
Don't judge me.
(laughing) - So you can see I workedon the coconuts right there, now I want to work on the palm trees.
(soft upbeat music) - Gorgeous!- Kinda scared, still scared.
I'm two toning my palm tree which it is a little cut off too, but if you guys can see that.
- [Kayla] I need moreseashells, okay here's one.
- I gotta give it depth so I like picking a lightercolor and a darker color that are similar and thenputting them both together and then that makes me feellike it's more colorful, right? It's not so flat.
- Well I just like paintingseashells purple so.
(laughing) Oop, I rested my hand onsome paint, that's fun.
- Didn't spill?- The tea.
(laughing)- What? (laughing)You didn't spill the tea? - Yeah! I asked what's the tea.
- What's the tea? - [Kayla] Yeah, what's the tea? - I don't know what she's saying.
(laughing)What's that mean? - [Kayla] What's the tea? - I'm not cool and hip, what does that mean? - Oof.
- What's the tea? What's the time? - What's the tea?- What's the time? - What's the tea?- What's that mean? (laughing) I don't get it.
- You'll never know.
(laughing) - That's just mean!(laughing) So let's do some coconuts here.
I'm just gonna, do do, color 'em all in.
They look like bowling balls.
- Yeah! - Oh, bananas are yellow too, I'm just gonna color everything yellow in.
Do real coconuts have the three holes? - I thought they did.
- The three knobs.
- Okay, the dolphins are not living their best life but that's all right.
- They look gorgeous,(laughing) they're very bright and colorful.
(soft playful music) What does Ty stand for? - [Kayla] I don't know, I just know that they make Beanie Boos.
- [Mom] Beanie Boos, Beanie Boo letters.
So that's what these are? - Yes!- They're Beanie Boos.
My red and yellow aredefinitely starting to mix because I am going out of the lines.
- Wow, pretty snazzy,I should be an artist.
(laughing) - [Mom] It's kind ofcreating an orange, I guess, around them, like orange yellow.
- [Kayla] I kinda like justpainting on my hands, honestly.
(laughing) You know those things thatare suppose to relieve stress, or the coloring books thatare suppose to relieve stress? - They seem stressful!- Yeah, I can't.
There's so much to do, I getoverwhelmed before I start.
I'm like, oh no! You know I'm just gonna.
This is much more fun to me.
- Coloring your hand? (laughing)Kayla! - It's so fun! I'm a lizard.
- [Mom] You're a lizard? I need more paintbrushes, these ones are too big.
- I'm a lizard.
Did anybody ever used to putElmer's glue on your hand and then peel it off when it dried? That was always super satisfying.
We'll just paint one handed now.
- [Mom] I want my monkeys to be purple.
(lighthearted ukulele music) He's got a little ear right there.
- Wow, this is a look, honestly, wow.
- [Mom] Pretty sure this monkey-- - Wow, that makes my hand look really big.
Now, the cheetah orange? Sure.
And cheetahs are gonna be orange.
- Yes, cheetahs are orange.
- I'm just gonna covereverything in orange and then wait for the orangeto dry and then cover the spots because I really don't wantto paint through the spots, that'd be kind of annoying.
New word of the day, tedious.
I don't know the definition but that's what this is if you didn't.
Skip over all of the circle dot thingies.
- [Mom] The smaller stuffis definitely harder to do.
- [Kayla] Yes.
I'm trying to show them my green hand, I'm gonna stop because-- - [Mom] Does that meanyou have a green thumb? - I don't want to close my hand.
- [Mom] Do you know what a green thumb is? - Yes, it means you're good at gardening.
And I am very much not,I'm working on it though, it's my New Year's resolution.
- [Mom] She's gonna grow some plants.
- My fern is dying, but I'm saving it.
(laughing)- You're furnace? - Fern is.
- Furnace?(Mom laughing) - You're next! (upbeat techno music) So I think we are good.
We got quite a bit of color for only having three colors originally.
So it's very colorful, Mom definitely helped me.
- I'm proud of it, I think it looks really good.
- I like that.
I like how you mixed in a light blue with thedarker blue for the water.
That turned out really good.
- I think all of it is super pretty.
So we start off in theocean with our little, what are they called, dolphins! And then you got a cheetahunder his umbrella, and then a tiger.
- Super cute.
I like how you did the dots.
I kinda ignored the dots on my side, as you can tell here.
- [Kayla] And then Mom did themonkey in the little hammock.
We got a giraffe.
- [Mom] I was gonna go back and color in the spots with a darker color.
- [Kayla] Same with thecheetah, but I got lazy.
(laughing)- But we had a lot to color, so I thought the brightyellow would be fine.
- And then you got a littlesandcastle and a zebra, and then there's a second monkey.
Yeah, and then the Beanie Boo logo.
So I hope you guys enjoyedthis video, comment down below.
- Have you ever colored anything larger than what would bein a normal coloring book? Like this is a pretty big poster, have you done a colored poster before? - I've actually never seen these before, these are actually really cool.
I definitely recommend paints though, 'cause I think this wouldtake a while with markers.
- This was about anhour between two people so if you were by yourself this would probably be a day project.
(laughing)- Don't forget to subscribe to our other family channelsand until next time-- - [Both] Bye! (upbeat music).
Letterpress Printing and Poster Design | RushMyPrints
Welcome to Poster Printing at MERIT.
Hi! I need to print something right now.
It's an 8 1/2 by 11 PowerPoint that I need to be printed as a 36 by 48 poster.
Can you please help me out? Because I need to have this printed and be in my car and on the way to the conference in about 5 minutes.
Alright, so we can definitely do that for you.
Except first, we need you to resize your slide to the dimensions you want for your poster, and then save it as a PDF.
So while you do that, we’ll put you in line and you’re after two other people that are also printing posters for the same conference as you.
So, just so you know, it takes about 30 minutes to print a 36 by 48 size poster and we only have one printer.
[falls to ground] Don’t let this happen to you.
For stress-free poster printing start with the right size document, have one dimension less than 41 inches, use high resolution images, proof-read your poster, bring your file to MERIT in PDF format, allow enough time to print, and have money on your Wiscard or printing account.
First, start with the right size document.
In Adobe products, such as Illustrator, you can set the width and height of your project when you start a new document.
To set the size of your slide in PowerPoint, go to File to Page Setup, and from there enter the width and height.
This is especially important in PowerPoint, because if you resize your slide after the fact, the different objects within your PowerPoint won't scale very well.
If you are given a department template with the wrong dimensions, resize your template in the beginning, or ask your department for a template with the right dimensions.
It’s important to keep in mind that one dimension must be 41 inches or less in order to fit on our poster printer.
Always use high resolution images for your poster.
While an image might look okay on your screen, when you print it at a large size, it may start looking pixelated.
It is always a good idea to use 300 dpi, or dots per inch images on your poster.
It is important to proof-read your poster.
You can use spell check, of course, but it is also important to have a person look at it as well.
Ask a friend, or a mentor, or go the Writing Center to get help with your draft.
Once it is proof-read and ready to go, bring your file to MERIT in PDF format.
This will ensure that we can get your poster started printing swiftly.
Allow enough time to print your poster.
Our poster printer is available on a first come first served basis.
It takes about a half hour for a 36 inch by 48 inch poster to print.
And finally, have money on on your Wiscard or printing account to pay for your poster once it's printed.
You can learn more about your options for payment on the library’s website on its Ways to Pay page which is also linked below this video.
So remember, start with the right size document, have one dimension less than 41 inches, use high resolution images, proof-read your poster, bring your file to MERIT in PDF format, allow enough time to print, and have money on your Wiscard or printing account.
And if you do these things, you will have poster printing success.
For additional help, know you can always contact a MERIT Librarian.
